 Thanjavur has remained the cultural citadel of Tamil Nadu for more than a millenium.It has been ruled by various dynasties: the early, middle and later Cholas(500 B.C - AD 200 and AD850 - 1300),the Nayaks (AD 1532 -1675), the Marathas(AD 1676 -1855) and the British.
Though the city changed hands time and again,it was blessed with a succession of rulers who were great builders and patrons of art and culture.
Chathrapathy Sivajis half brother Venkoji founded the Thanjavur Maratha Dynasty .Sefroji II was the tenth ruler from Venkoji.A scholar Philosopher and humanist, he is revered the most among all Thanjavur Maratha kings.
Serfoji was born on
september 24, 1777 in the royal house of the maratha king,
Chattrapathy Shivaji, Raja Thulajah, the king of Thanjavur,
adopted him as his son on january 23,1787 by duly performing all
religious rites. thereafter the king entrusted the boy
to the care of Rev.Christian Friedrich Schwartz, a Danish
